The computer memory or computer RAM of a computer is a collection of integrated circuits that temporarily holds data and program information for the computer to use. When the computer is shutoff the memory in the computer RAM is erased. There are many different types of computer memory, but the most common kind that we use in our desktops today is DDR (Double Data Rate), DDR2, and DDR3 DRAM. The difference between the 3 variations of DDR is that DD2 has higher clock speeds than DDR, and DDR3 has an even higher clock speed than the DDR2 computer RAM. A laptop uses the same kinds of computer memory, but they come in a different packaging called SO-DIMMS, so be wary when upgrading a laptop’s memory that you pick you out the right kind.

What to look out for when purchasing computer memory

Is It a laptop or a desktop?: Laptops and desktops use different kinds of computer memory, laptops use SO-DIMMs and desktops use DIMM, so make sure you don’t get the wrong kind.
Memory slots on your motherboard: Check the motherboard manual to find out what kind of slots the motherboard has, it should tell you how many pins each memory slot is made for, something like 4×240pin or 2×184pin.
Computer Memory standard: Check the computer memory standard on your motherboard, it’ll tell you up to what speed memory your motherboard is compatible with, when purchasing RAM make sure it is the same speed as the computer memory standard, like DDR2 800, or DDR2 1066.
Dual Channel: If your motherboard is dual-channel compatible try buying your computer memory in a dual-channel kit, because it’s considerably faster than single channel memory.
