I’ve mentioned in my previous case mod posts, Case Modding For Dummies, and DIY Case Mods, that I’ve done a few case mods to my computers as well.

eMachines Fan Case Mod

The first mod I ever did was add a fan to the side of an old eMachines computer that I got as my first computer ever. I did this as a result of it overheating and breaking down one summer. So I cut out a hole for a good-sized 120mm fan, and drilled it into the inside of the case, added a mesh filter for catching dust, and then drilled a fan grill on the outside. Even though it’s a bit tacky with the case the mod still looks pretty sweet and the fan is really powerful.

DHL Express Case Mod

The second mod that I did included a bunch of DHL shipping boxes and our old HP computer that we’ve had for ages. I think we bought it sometime around 1997 or so, man that thing is slow. I took it out of the case, and basically ripped the case to pieces, then used several DHL boxes to make a case. These were the flat shipping boxes, that were more like cardboard shipping envelopes, probably good for a couple stacks of paper, a VHS tape, or something like a book, but nothing much more than that. I had to cut and hot glue the boxes together to form a correct box shape, because I wanted to create an actual DHL box, that did not resemble a computer case and was almost completely intact, and looked as if someone had shipped a cardboard box full of stuff. I also wanted to be able to lift up the box from the top to easily take off the case.

The actual case mod went well, except I had problems with computer parts sliding around, and the box is still kind of flimsy, I may have to reinforce it with some extra cardboard. I had a grand idea of making a drive bay for my CD drive that’s left in the computer, but ultimately I was unable to pull it off. So this case mod is still a work-in-progress and one day may be finished, but for now it’s left collecting dust under my entertainment stand.

Talking about this case mod reminds me of a bet that I made with someone while I was doing this, and it involved me being able to make the drive bay door work within the next day of making the bet… so I guess I owe someone five dollars now.
